THIS BLOG WAS SET UP TO CHRONICLE OUR ADVENTURES IN MÉXICO & GUATEMALA IN 2010.

Mike and I explored the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula for 2 weeks of flyfishing (Mike), diving (Stacey), snorkeling, Maya ruins, a colonial city, cenotes, quite a few hammocks and lots of great food.

When Mike flew home I headed to San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas for 2 weeks of Spanish study with a small group in tow. We lived with host families and visited area sights including villages, museums, and ruins.

When the group flew home I bused to San Pedro La Laguna on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala for a week of planning for future growth of the Beca Project (link below) and meeting our sponsored kids and their families.

When our daughter Mariah and her husband Greg invited us to share a timeshare in Quintana Roo between Christmas and New Years, a new chapter to this blog was added. HAPPY TRAILS!

Cenote Diving, Snorkeling with Turtles, and More Good Eating

Something new for me today, or at least a rare twist on a favorite hobby: cenote diving! It was AMAZING - gorgeous light and blues and greens, curious cave formations, spooky dark places, and a halocline, the line where the salt water (below) and fresh water (above) mix, causing a blurry layer you can barely see in that looks like a separate water surface from above and from below - fascinating! We did 2 dives, Gran Cenote and Calaveras (Temple of Doom) Cenote. I took a photo before the dive master and I geared up at Gran Cenote and found a cool website that will give you a better idea of what it was like:

I returned to our place to find Mike had prepared a perfect lunch - fresh vegies, avocado, and tropical fruit with brown bread. We hung out for awhile then headed to Akumal, about 14 miles north of Tulum, to go snorkeling in Turtle Bay. Sea turtles were EVERYWHERE - too many to count! We snorkeled for about 2 hours and took lots of photos; 2 of my favorites are below. I will never forget sharing that time with Mike and dozens of those beautiful, peaceful creatures.

Back in Tulum we cleaned up and found an open air restaurant with live music and a wonderful sea food plate for 2 with rice, spicy vegies, salsa, tortillas, fish, shrimp, squid, and octopus. The perfect adventurous meal to match an adventurous day. HAPPY TRAILS!

  1. I LOVE this post and every picture in it!! The turtle pic and the one of you in your masks are awesome, and dad looks SO happy to have that huge platter of fresh seafood in front of him. Ha! I'm glad you guys are doing fun stuff together too, and not only enjoying your own separate passions.
    Love you! ~Mariah
