Tonina and Agua Azul - July 3rd

Happy birthday to Carlos!

Our group of 5 set out with our driver, Ramiro, and after 3 hours of road construction, dozens of topes (speed bumps), gorgeous mountain vistas, and a quick stop for quesadillas, we arrived at the ruins of Tonina. Lightly visited, we were happy we’d gone out of our way to find a private driver which allowed us to enjoy these beautiful ruins which include many well preserved sculptures and frescoes and a massive temple built up the face of a hill.

The museum was very nice, especially for a small site.

We sent the Andreas back to San Cristobal for other week-end plans and Sandee, Jan, Ramiro, and I headed to Agua Azul, a long series of waterfalls that were still beautiful despite recent rains toning down the usual turquoise hues.

Sandee and I enjoyed a cooling dip before we hit the road for Palenque where we spent the night at Hotel Xibalba - strange to be in a muggy, hot place again after a week in San Cristobal. HAPPY TRAILS!
